SFX MAGAZINE: Grimm Interviews: Russell Hornsby & Silas Weir Mitchell

Two of the stars of Grimm, which kicks off in the UK on Monday 13 February on Watch, talk exclusively to SFX

by Dave Golder
February 11 2012

In case you hadn’t noticed, fairytales are big in Hollywood at the moment. We’ve got not one, but two versions of Snow White hitting the big screen this year (Mirror, Mirror and Snow White And The Hunstman) and Jack The Giant Killer is in production, while on the small screen we already have Once Upon A Time, while there are two versions of Beauty And The Beast in development.

At the vanguard of this new wave of screen fantasy, though, is Grimm, which has already proven a big hit on NBC in the States, and begins here in the UK on Monday on Watch. But don’t expect anything twee or cute about this take on fairy tales.

Grimm is a genre hybrid: it’s primarily a hard-bitten police procedural that just happens to involve creatures inspired by Grimms’ Fairy Tales. It stars David Guintoli as Nick Burkhardt, a cop who discovers he is a “Grimm” and can see these creatures (and we’ll have an interview with him on the site next week). Here, though, we chat to two of the show’s impressive cast of supporting characters...

... Russell Hornsby: Hank Griffin

Q: For the first part of the season at least we don’t learn much about Hank’s private life. Do you know his back story?

Russell Hornsby: “I have an idea in my head, and what I’ve learned as an actor is to keep it to myself, not to ask the writers or producers. What they have shared with me, is my character was married and divorced four times to a variety of accomplished women: doctors, lawyers, anthropologists, things of that nature. So I’ve learned a lot from various different women, which is the case with a lot of men. We are judged by the company we keep.

“Other things are coming down the pipe for my back story: where I live, my home life, what I do when I’m off, all those things. But again we have to build the nucleus and the foundations first, which right now is about Nick and his character and his world. I think what will keep the audience engaged is when we delve into the lives of the secondary characters...

Photobucket

... Silas Weir Mitchell: Monroe

Q: What appealed to you about the role?

Silas Weir Mitchell: “The inner conflict. I mean drama is about conflict and inner conflict is inherently interesting. So the idea of a being whose very identity constantly hangs in the balance, I find very interesting. I think there is a potential there for it to be very intense. There is a levity to the show, and there’s also the procedural element. A crime is solved every week, and a criminal is caught every week. So there is a rhythm to the show. But I certainly think there is room for the darker elements of the human animal – the human psyche – to be played upon.

“Because really I think what we’re dealing with are creatures – on a psychological level – that people who are unable to withstand their darker impulses. And when a Grimm sees a creature, what they’re seeing is a creature who’s out of control. And whatever they are – some of us might be a mouse, some of might be a lion – underneath the human mask lies this dark element...

Grimm airs Friday at 9/8C on NBC in the USA.

COLLIDER: Creator/Executive Producer Graham Yost Talks JUSTIFIED Season 3; Hopes to Have Patton Oswalt and Eric Stonestreet Guest Star

by Christina Radish
February 13th, 2012

Developed by Graham Yost and starring Timothy Olyphant, Justified is based on the works of crime novelist Elmore Leonard. As Season 2 ended the Bennett family’s hold over Harlan County and marked the return of Raylan’s (Olyphant) old nemesis/friend Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) to the criminal life, Season 3 picked up with him finding out that he and his crew aren’t the only ones making a play to rule the Harlan underworld. Now, Raylan finds himself dealing with a pregnant ex-wife (Natalie Zea) while facing off against dirty politicians, a mysterious man named Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson), and an enterprising criminal from the Motor City (Neal McDonough).

While at the TCA Winter Press Tour, showrunner/executive producer/writer Graham Yost talked to Collider for this exclusive interview about where this season is headed, how the new criminal element will affect things, that he’s hoping to get Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) and Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) on as guest stars since they’re both big fans of the show, the pressure of not repeating yourself while living up to what fans expect, and how far ahead they plan out where things are going with the story...

... Collider: Having this proven track record of amazing guest stars for season-long stories, is it easier to get amazing actors to sign on?

Graham Yost: "George Clooney was begging to be on this show. No. It’s not easier. It’s still basic cable. We don’t pay a lot of money. You do it because you’re going to have fun, and I suppose that might make it easier. We’ve toyed with the idea of stunt casting in the past, to try to get someone big in, but the closest is getting Carla [Gugino] into this season. We’re also really interested in who the coolest actor is. We didn’t write Mags for Margo [Martindale]. We wrote Mags and then cast it, and Margo just jumped off the screen. We didn’t write Quarles and Limehouse for Neal [McDonough] and Ti [Mykelti Williamson], but as we were crafting the characters, I thought of them.

It would be nice if we got more people. We hear things. Someone will say that they love the show and would love to be on it. We’ve been trying, since the end of the first season, to figure out a way to get Eric Stonestreet on the show. He’s a fan, and we had a part, but we just couldn’t work his schedule out. That was the part that Pruitt Taylor Vince plays in the third episode, and was so spectacular that I’m fine with the way it worked out. But, we’ll always try to find a place for Stonestreet.

And, Patton Oswalt wrote a very beautiful little thing, in tribute to Margo, in the New York Times magazine. He likes the show as well. With him launching Young Adult, he was just unavailable. And the problem is, once you get towards the end of the season, there’s no room for guest characters because it’s then all about our serialized story...
"

Justified airs Tuesday at 10/9C on FX.

GEEK DAD: “Hack of All Trades” – An Interview With Eureka Co-Creator Andrew Cosby

By John Booth
February 13, 2012

A little more than a year ago, I found myself unexpectedly hooked on Syfy’s Eureka.

Perhaps not so unexpectedly, the Syfy network announced the entertaining and enjoyable show would end following the forthcoming fifth season, which has wrapped production and is set to air sometime this summer.

As the end of Eureka draws near, though, co-creator Andrew Cosby is as busy as ever.

A geeky dad and self-described “hack of all trades” who works in comics, television, movies and has been known to “go a little nuts around Halloween,” Cosby recently took some time for an email interview with GeekDad about Eureka, fatherhood, and what just might be the next big “v-word” in rabid fan circles...

... Booth: What’s been your favorite episode, story arc or moment?

Andrew Cosby: "I loved the WWII time travel relaunch at the beginning of Season Four. That was something Jaime [Paglia] and I had talked about since the show’s inception. In fact, Einstein’s letter to Roosevelt about the atomic bomb and the fact that mankind’s future rests in the hands of scientists and not soldiers was a huge inspiration for me in creating the show in the first place. I’d actually used it in one of my earlier comic projects, G.I. Spy. But if I had to pick a favorite single moment from the entire series, it would be Beverly Barlowe poisoning Susan Perkins at the end of the pilot. I know that’s an odd moment to choose, but it represents a certain darker tone I felt was missing from the series after my departure. For me, those edgier bits really make a world of difference. They somehow ground things, which allows you to really stretch the boundaries in other areas..."
